About This Opportunity
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC 10), organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), is a highly regarded annual mathematics competition designed to challenge and inspire high school students. This 75-minute, 25-question multiple-choice exam aims to develop strong problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning beyond the standard school curriculum.
The AMC 10 serves as the crucial first step for students aspiring to qualify for advanced competitions like the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). The competition covers topics such as elementary algebra, basic geometry (including Pythagorean Theorem, area, and volume formulas), elementary number theory, and elementary probability. It specifically excludes advanced topics like trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry.
Students can choose to participate in either AMC 10A or AMC 10B, or both, with the higher score being considered for awards and qualifications. The problems are structured to progressively increase in difficulty, encouraging strategic thinking and careful pacing.
Participation in the AMC 10 is highly valued by top universities, especially those with strong STEM programs, as it demonstrates a student's intellectual curiosity, resilience, and passion for mathematics.
