About This Opportunity
The Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) is an annual international competition aimed at identifying and challenging mathematically gifted high school students from Pacific-Rim countries. It promotes mathematical excellence, creative problem-solving, and international academic exchange. The contest consists of a single four-hour examination featuring five advanced problems, each carrying a maximum of 7 points, requiring deep conceptual understanding and proof-based reasoning.
In India, students cannot directly register for APMO. Participation is strictly by invitation through the Mathematical Olympiad Programme (MOP), which is conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
The Indian selection follows a clearly defined multi-stage pathway, and it is recommended to treat each stage as a separate opportunity instance with its own dates and timelines:
IOQM (Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics) – First stage and entry point
RMO (Regional Mathematical Olympiad) – Second stage
INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad) – Third stage
Only students who perform exceptionally well in INMO and are selected for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) become eligible to represent India in APMO.
All registrations, official notifications, syllabi, and stage-wise schedules are published only on the official HBCSE Mathematics Olympiad page, which should be referenced as the authoritative source for this opportunity.
APMO problems emphasize advanced mathematics, logical reasoning, and rigorous proof writing, offering students significant national and international recognition. Strong performance enhances prospects for advanced studies and careers in mathematics, science, engineering, and research, making APMO a highly prestigious milestone in the Olympiad pathway.

Rounds & format
The APMO consists of a single four-hour written examination with five problems. Each problem is worth a maximum of 7 points. The APMO is organized locally by a representative in each participating country. In India, it is conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the APMO Committee. Students qualify for the Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) through the IOQM and INMO stages conducted by HBCSE. Top INMO performers are invited to appear for APMO
How entries are judged
Awards are determined based on minimum score requirements set each year, considering the mean and standard deviation of all scores. Specific criteria for Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Honourable Mention are applied.
Selection process
In India, selection for APMO is based on performance in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) and subsequent selection for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC). All INMO awardees and selected girl students from INMO who attend IMOTC are eligible to write APMO.
How to apply
- 1Participation in APMO from India is by invitation only, based on performance in the preceding stages of the Mathematical Olympiad Programme (IOQM, RMO, INMO) and selection for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC). Eligible students will be notified and allotted regional centers for the exam.
How to prepare
- Solving past APMO problems from the official website.
- Practicing problems from other international math Olympiads.
- Studying books on algebra, number theory, geometry, and combinatorics.
- Focusing on proof techniques and mathematical reasoning.
- Developing strong time management skills through consistent practice.
