About This Opportunity
The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is a highly esteemed international mathematics competition exclusively for high school female students who demonstrate exceptional talent and passion for mathematics. This competition aims to inspire and encourage young women to excel in mathematics and pursue advanced studies and careers in STEM fields. India has consistently participated in EGMO since 2015, with its teams achieving notable success on the global stage.
Participation in EGMO is strictly by invitation, with each country nominating a team of up to four female participants. For Indian students, the selection process is comprehensive and involves multiple stages of the national Mathematical Olympiad program, including the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM), Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), and Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO). Top-performing girls from these stages are invited to a specialized training camp, from which the final team is meticulously selected.
EGMO offers a unique and invaluable opportunity for mathematically gifted young women to challenge their abilities, develop advanced problem-solving and critical mathematical reasoning skills, and engage in enriching cultural and academic interactions with peers from around the world. This experience significantly enhances their mathematical creativity and ingenuity, providing a strong foundation and competitive advantage for higher education and promising career prospects in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Rounds & format
The EGMO contest consists of two written tests held on consecutive days, with three problems in each test. The selection process for EGMO in India involves six stages: Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM), Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) / European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (EGMOTC), and finally the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) itself.
How entries are judged
Problems are graded based on the correctness and completeness of the mathematical proofs and solutions. Each problem typically carries 7 points.
Selection process
At EGMO, participants solve 6 problems over two days, each scored out of 7 (total 42 points). Winners are selected based on total scores. The top ~8% receive gold, next 17% silver, next 25% bronze. Others scoring full marks on a problem earn honorable mentions.
How to apply
- 1There is no direct application for EGMO. Selection is based on performance in the multi-stage Indian Mathematical Olympiad program. Students must first qualify through IOQM, RMO, and INMO. Top-performing girls are then invited to a training camp (EGMOTC) where the final team of four is selected.
How to prepare
- Previous years' EGMO question papers and solutions
- Previous years' IOQM, RMO, INMO question papers and solutions
- Books on Olympiad mathematics (e.g., 'Euclidean Geometry in Mathematical Olympiads' by Evan Chen, 'Modern Olympiad Number Theory' by Aditya Khurmi)
- Online resources and handouts from experienced Olympiad trainers (e.g., Yufei Zhao's, Evan Chen's, Rohan Goyal's handouts)
- Participation in training camps and problem-solving sessions
- Mock tests to simulate exam conditions
