About This Opportunity

The Hippo English Olympiad is a global competition organized by the Global Hippo Association, a non-profit organization based in Italy. It aims to promote the English language, challenge students globally, and foster cooperation among teachers. The Olympiad encourages the development of a shared identity and integration, serving as a role model for young people living together as one community.

It also provides students with an opportunity to measure their English proficiency against international standards and become familiar with examination concepts.

This competition is open to students aged 6-19 from around the world, including India. Participants are divided into various categories based on their school grades and CEFR levels, ranging from Baby Hippo (Grade 1-2) to Hippo 5 (Grade 12-13).

Students can register either individually or through their schools, with options for both regular and special categories for those with higher English proficiency.

Students aged 6-19 (Grades 1-12) from national and international schools are eligible. Participants can choose between regular and special categories based on their English proficiency. Students who reached the previous year's World Final round cannot compete in the same category.

The Olympiad is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and uses internationally recognized, Ofqual-regulated English qualifications. Rounds & format

The competition has four main rounds: Preliminary Round, National Final Round, Regional Qualifiers, and World Final Round. The Preliminary Round consists of Reading Comprehension and Use of English tests. The National Final Round includes Reading, Writing (30 questions), and an Essay. Regional Qualifiers involve Use of English open-ended questions and a crossword. The World Final Round features a Gatehouse Awards exam covering reading, writing, listening, and speaking, along with a Use of English test.

How entries are judged

Ranking in preliminary and national rounds is based on the average number of marks achieved in the respective tests. For the World Final, candidates take a Gatehouse Awards exam, and an additional Use of English test is used for final ranking. Essays in the National Final are assessed only to break ties. There is no negative marking.

Selection process

Top 10% of participants from each country in the Preliminary Round advance to the National Finals. Students with the best ranking among those not qualified for the World Finals may be admitted to Regional Qualifiers. Winners of Regional Qualifiers proceed to the World Finals. Wildcards may be granted to the best candidate in each category from countries with no direct qualifiers.

  • Sample test papers and answers are provided by the organizing committee upon registration.

  • Online mock test series may be available through the International Olympiad Academy.

The registration fee is ₹1000 per student in India for school sign-ups. This fee typically includes paper fees, examination fees, marking fees, certificate fees, reference questions, and one online practice exam. Fees for individual registrations may vary or be announced separately.
