About This Opportunity
The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) is a highly selective and prestigious competition for high school students across India, organized annually by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the aegis of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM). As the third stage of the Mathematical Olympiad Program, its primary goal is to identify, encourage, and nurture exceptional mathematical talent nationwide.
The INMO is renowned for its challenging, proof-based problems that demand deep conceptual understanding, rigorous logical reasoning, and creative problem-solving abilities, moving beyond mere rote memorization. Students who successfully qualify through the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) or the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) are eligible to participate in the INMO. Achieving success in the INMO is a significant academic milestone, providing a direct pathway to the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) and potentially leading to selection for the Indian team at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
The examination typically comprises 6-7 subjective problems, requiring comprehensive solutions with detailed proofs, to be completed within four hours. The syllabus covers advanced topics in algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics, specifically excluding calculus and statistics. Beyond national and international recognition, qualifying INMO offers substantial academic and career advantages, including various scholarship opportunities and preferential admissions to top-tier institutions in India.

Academic requirement
Must have qualified the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) or Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM). Previous INMO awardees are also eligible for direct entry. Students must be enrolled in a recognized school in India.
Prerequisites
- Strong foundation in high school mathematics (Class 11-12 level)
- To be eligible for INMO, a student must first qualify in the IOQM, followed by the RMO.
Additional requirements
- Must be an Indian citizen or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Only Indian citizens may join the Indian IMO team.
- Must not have been accepted into any college or university course prior to June 1 of the IMO year.
- Must not have completed or be enrolled in Class 12 before May 31 of the IMO year.
- Students must be born on or after July 1, 2004 (for current Olympiad cycle, specific date may vary annually).
Open to Indian citizens and OCIs in Grades 8-12 (typically ages 13-18). Candidates must qualify through the RMO/IOQM or be a previous INMO awardee. Students should not have completed Class 12 or enrolled in a university course before specific dates. This is a nationwide opportunity with no location restrictions within India. The exam is 4.5 hours with 6-7 proof-based problems, total 102 marks. Qualification is through RMO (top 30 from Category A + 5 girls, top 6 from Category B).
