About This Opportunity
IndiaSkills Junior: Solar Energy is a national skill championship designed to introduce school students to the rapidly growing field of renewable energy. This competition provides a platform for young minds to explore the practical applications of solar technology, from understanding core concepts to working with components for basic installations.
Organized by the Ministry of Skills Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), this initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020's focus on vocational and practical learning.
Participants get hands-on experience, learn from industry experts, and develop critical skills for a sustainable future, making them part of India's clean energy mission.

Academic requirement
Students pursuing Science stream with Physics as a subject are encouraged to apply, though students from other streams with a strong interest in renewable energy are also welcome.
Prerequisites
- Basic understanding of electrical concepts (circuits, voltage, current).
- Familiarity with fundamental physics principles.
- A strong interest in renewable energy and sustainable technologies.
- Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
Open to Indian students in grades 11-12, typically aged 16-18. Participants must be enrolled in a recognized school. While students from the Science stream are preferred, those from other streams with a demonstrated interest in solar technology can also apply. This is a nationwide opportunity.

What's covered
The curriculum covers the fundamentals of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including the function of various components like solar panels, inverters, batteries, and charge controllers. Participants will learn about system design, how to identify optimal locations for installation, calculate system size, assemble components, and perform basic installation and troubleshooting while adhering to electrical safety standards.

The competition typically involves four stages: an initial online screening (MCQs), followed by two more online rounds requiring project submissions, and culminating in an on-ground national final where the top 8 students per skill compete.
How entries are judged
Participants are evaluated on workmanship, accuracy, adherence to safety protocols, speed and time management, and the overall quality of their solar PV system installation. The assessment covers both theoretical knowledge and practical execution.
Selection process
The competition is structured in multiple stages. Participants first compete at the district/zonal level, with top performers advancing to state-level competitions. Winners from the state level move on to regional competitions, and finally, the best from each region compete at the IndiaSkills National Competition.
