About This Opportunity
The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is a prestigious annual competition for secondary school students worldwide. It is designed to identify, inspire, and support the next generation of leaders in the life sciences. The IBO aims to promote interest in biology and related fields, provide international exposure, and encourage research and development in biology. The competition assesses students' ability to tackle complex biological problems and conduct experiments, emphasizing creativity, inventiveness, and perseverance. For Indian students, participation in the IBO involves a rigorous five-stage selection process that begins at the national level. This includes the National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB), the Indian National Olympiad in Biology (INBO), an Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC), and a Pre-Departure Training Camp. Only the top four students from India's national competitions are selected to represent the country at the International Biology Olympiad. The IBO competition itself comprises both theoretical and practical examinations, each typically lasting several hours. The theoretical exams cover a broad range of biology topics, while the practical exams evaluate hands-on skills in biological laboratories. The IBO also fosters an international network among talented biology students and future life science leaders, encouraging cross-cultural dialogue and setting high standards in biology education. This global platform offers an unparalleled opportunity for academic growth, skill development, and significant recognition that can greatly enhance university applications and future career prospects in the life sciences.

Rounds & format
The IBO for Indian students involves five stages: Stage 1: National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB) organized by IAPT. Stage 2: Indian National Olympiad in Biology (INBO) organized by HBCSE. Stage 3: Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) for top 35 students at HBCSE. Stage 4: Pre-Departure Training Camp at HBCSE. Stage 5: International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
How entries are judged
Winners are determined based on a t-score method, considering marks from both theoretical and practical exams, with approximately equal weightage for each.
Selection process
At the IBO, winners are selected purely based on their combined scores from theoretical and practical exams. The IBO Jury standardizes scoring and sets medal cut-offs, but does not choose winners manually.
How to apply
- 1Participation is through selection from national-level biology olympiads. Students cannot register directly for IBO. In India, this involves qualifying through NSEB, INBO, and OCSC.
- 2The first stage, National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB), requires compulsory enrollment through the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT).
How to prepare
- Previous years' question papers available on the IBO official website (ibo-info.org/en/info/papers.html).
- Biology textbooks covering topics beyond the standard school curriculum.
- Study guides and sample papers from national olympiad organizers (e.g., NSEB, INBO).
- Specialized training camps and workshops provided by organizations like HBCSE and coaching institutes.
