Rounds & format
The competition includes a mandatory Written Exam, a comprehensive Battery Exam, Beach Ecology Fieldwork, and the Environmental Science Bee. Additional optional exams on Meteorology and Climate Change, along with various task force challenges, are also part of the event.
How entries are judged
Individual overall champions are determined by the combined highest position across the Battery Exam, Beach Ecology Fieldwork, Environmental Science Bee, and Written Exam. Tie-breaking procedures involve performance on these components in a specific order, followed by multiple-choice questions if needed.
Selection process
Students must qualify by achieving specific scores on the International Environmental Science Olympiad Qualifying Exam, National Science Bee National Qualifying Exam, or by placing in the top 2/3 of their age division in the Environmental Science Exam at IAC Asian or European Championships.

- Past editions of the National Environmental Science Exam are recommended for preparation, as they are similar in content and focus to the IESO Battery Exam.

Fee details
The base fee for competing students is $1175. An optional unaccompanied student supplement is $875 for high school students. The Family & Friends Program costs $125 per family member. Payments by credit card incur a 4% transaction charge, while wire transfers have a flat $35 charge.
Refund policy
A processing fee of $50 USD is typically non-refundable. Full refunds (minus the processing fee and any transaction charges for credit card or wire transfer payments) are generally available up to a specified date before the event. Partial refunds (e.g., 50%) may be offered for cancellations made closer to the event, with no refunds typically available after a late cancellation deadline.
