Rounds & format
Round 1: Online application and project submission with a YouTube video presentation. For GENIUS Coding, this involves a one-hour online competition with up to 5 Python coding problems. Round 2: In-person presentation and judging at the Rochester Institute of Technology for finalists. For GENIUS Coding, this is a 2.5-hour in-person competition with multiple Python coding problems.
How entries are judged
Projects are judged on the application of the scientific method, feasibility and originality of the solution, and potential impact on environmental problems. Presentations are evaluated on organization, content, and ability to answer questions. For GENIUS Coding, scoring is based on the number of problems solved, time taken, number of attempts, and energy efficiency (carbon footprint) of the code.
Selection process
Projects are selected based on their originality, scientific rigor, potential impact on environmental issues, and the quality of the presentation. For GENIUS Coding, finalists are selected based on performance in the First Step Competition. An average acceptance rate of around 29.6% makes it a selective competition.

Fee details
Application Fee: $60 USD per project (non-refundable). Participation Fee (if selected as a finalist): $600 USD per participant. Guest Fee: $500 USD (off-campus accommodation) or $850 USD (on-campus accommodation) for chaperones/guests. Travel expenses to and from the event campus are the responsibility of participants.
Refund policy
Only 50% of the participation fee is refundable within a specific time. Application fees are non-refundable.
