About This Opportunity

The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual global competition designed to evaluate the theoretical and experimental physics skills of high school students. It aims to promote physics education and stimulate interest in the subject among young people worldwide. The competition brings together bright students from over 80 countries to test their problem-solving abilities and deepen their understanding of physics.

For Indian students, participation in IPhO is a multi-stage process that begins with national-level examinations like the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP) and the Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO). Only the top-performing students from these national stages are selected to represent India at the international event. Students must be under 20 years old as of June 30th of the competition year and should not have commenced university studies.

Participating in IPhO offers significant benefits, including global recognition, enhanced problem-solving skills, and deep academic growth in physics. It provides networking opportunities with peers from around the world and can offer advantages for university admissions and future career prospects in STEM fields. Medals (gold, silver, bronze) and honorable mentions are awarded to top performers, along with certificates of participation for all contestants.

The competition typically involves two intensive examinations: a theoretical exam consisting of three problems and an experimental exam with one or two problems, each lasting five hours. These exams cover a broad spectrum of physics topics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and modern physics, requiring creative thinking and innovative application of concepts.

  • Successful qualification through national physics olympiad stages (NSEP, INPhO, OCSC).
  • Strong knowledge of physics concepts at the higher secondary level, including basic calculus.

Additional requirements

  • Must be officially nominated by the country's olympiad coordinator (e.g., HBCSE for India).
  • Must not have started university studies before June 1st of the competition year.
  • Must be an Indian citizen and resident, studying in India.
  • Must have successfully qualified through national physics olympiad stages (NSEP, INPhO, OCSC).

Open to Indian citizens under 20 years old (as of June 30th of the competition year) who are pursuing or have completed higher secondary education but have not yet started university. Participants must qualify through national physics olympiads like NSEP and INPhO and be officially nominated by the national organizing committee, HBCSE.

Rounds & format

The selection process for Indian students involves five stages: Stage 1: National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP) by IAPT. Stage 2: Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO) by HBCSE. Stage 3: Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) by HBCSE, where approximately the top 35 students from INPhO are selected. Stage 4: Pre-Departure Training Camp (PDT) for the selected Indian team. Stage 5: International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). Top students from the OCSC may also qualify to represent India in the Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) before IPhO.

How entries are judged

Scores are awarded for both theoretical and experimental examinations. The total marks are 30 for theoretical and 20 for experimental. Medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) and Honorable Mentions are awarded based on established minima, with Gold medals for the top 8% of contestants, Silver or better for the top 25%, Bronze or better for the top 50%, and Honorable Mention or better for the top 67%.

Selection process

At the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), winners are selected based on their combined scores from a theoretical and an experimental exam. Medals are awarded according to score percentiles, with gold, silver, bronze, and honorable mentions decided by the International Board.
