About This Opportunity
The International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT), often called the 'Physics World Cup', is a global scientific competition for secondary school students. It challenges participants to research 17 complex, open-ended physics problems over several months, culminating in a tournament where they present and defend their findings in a unique debate format known as 'Physics Fights'.
The Indian Young Physicists' Tournament (InYPT), organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), serves as the national qualifier. This online competition is open to students from grade 8 and above, nurturing scientific talent through an inquiry-based approach. Participants gain invaluable experience in research, experimental design, and critical thinking, while the 'Physics Fights' format enhances public speaking and scientific communication skills, strengthening their profiles for top university admissions.

Rounds & format
The tournament consists of multiple rounds conducted online. It starts with Round 0 (Qualification) through a research skills course. Qualified students proceed to Round 1 (Phenomenon Demonstration), Round 2 (Reporting), Round 3 (Opposing), and Round 4 (Reviewing). The top three students based on cumulative scores from these rounds compete in the Grand Finale, a live online 'Physics Fight'.
How entries are judged
Submissions are scored by a jury panel. Criteria include the scientific rigor of the research, depth of understanding, quality of the experimental and theoretical work, and performance in the Reporter, Opponent, and Reviewer roles during the debates. The final ranking is based on the cumulative score from rounds 2, 3, and 4.
Selection process
Students qualify for the main tournament by scoring above a minimum cut-off in the initial Physics Research Skills course. Progression through subsequent rounds is based on performance and submission quality. The top three students with the highest cumulative scores are selected for the Grand Finale.
