The examination is a single 120-minute (2-hour) paper. Beyond the exam, significant self-study and preparation time (several months) are recommended for success in the multi-stage Olympiad process.

About This Opportunity

The National Standard Examination in Biology (NSEB) is a prestigious national-level competitive examination designed for Indian students with a deep passion for biological sciences. It serves as the foundational first stage in the rigorous selection process for the highly acclaimed International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

Annually conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) and the Association of Teachers in Biological Services (ATBS), NSEB aims to identify, encourage, and nurture exceptionally talented students in biology across India. The examination comprehensively evaluates students' knowledge and understanding of diverse biological concepts, primarily aligning with the CBSE Class 11 and 12 syllabi.

Topics covered include Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Human Physiology, Plant Physiology, Biotechnology, and more, requiring a strong conceptual grasp and analytical skills. Successful candidates in NSEB progress through a multi-stage selection process: the Indian National Biology Olympiad (INBO), followed by the intensive Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC), and a Pre-Departure Camp.

This culminates in the opportunity to represent India at the International Biology Olympiad, providing a unique platform for students to showcase their scientific acumen on a global stage and interact with peers from around the world. Participation in NSEB not only opens doors to international recognition but also significantly enhances critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and provides a robust foundation for advanced studies and careers in biological and medical fields.
