About This Opportunity
The Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Contest is an annual international competition that encourages young people to engage with environmental issues through creative expression. The theme, "Connections to Nature: Looking Inside, Going Outside," prompts students to explore their unique relationship with the natural world and how being outdoors impacts them. This contest serves as a platform for youth to learn about the climate crisis and its effects on oceans, discover solutions, and advocate for positive change through art.
This contest is open to students worldwide, aged 11-18, who are enrolled in middle or high school (or the homeschool equivalent). Students are divided into two age divisions: Junior Division (11-14 years old) and Senior Division (15-18 years old). Participants can submit entries individually or as part of a group of any size. Students already enrolled in college or university are not eligible to participate.
Winners receive cash awards up to $1,000 USD, and their work becomes part of a global collection that inspires ocean protection. All participants receive a certificate of participation. The contest helps students gain knowledge about environmental issues, develop skills in communication, critical thinking, and creativity, and contribute to a global movement of young environmental advocates.
The contest also offers special awards like the Smithsonian Creativity in Resilience Award and the We All Rise Prize for eligible students. It provides a unique opportunity to build a portfolio, showcase talents worldwide, and be considered for future opportunities like the Future Blue Youth Council.

How entries are judged
Submissions are judged on how well they address the annual theme, demonstration of artistic voice, originality, imagination, craftsmanship (quality, technique, skill, attention to detail), accuracy of communicating issues, and adherence to category requirements. A written reflection accompanying the submission is also considered.
Selection process
Submissions are anonymously evaluated by at least three judges over a series of three rounds. Winners are selected based on the judging criteria.
