About This Opportunity
The Panini Linguistic Olympiad (PLO) is the flagship national program in India dedicated to identifying, nurturing, and selecting talented school students to represent the nation at the prestigious International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL). This highly regarded competition is coordinated by leading academic and research institutions, including Microsoft Research Labs India, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Delhi, International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad), and the University of Mumbai, with robust support from regional centers across India.
PLO's core mission is to ignite interest in linguistics and computational linguistics as dynamic fields of study and research among young minds. The competition is uniquely structured around solving self-contained linguistic puzzles. These puzzles are designed to be accessible, requiring no prior knowledge of specific languages or advanced linguistic theories. Instead, they demand strong logical reasoning, meticulous analytical skills, patient problem-solving, and innovative, 'out-of-the-box' thinking. Participants gain invaluable experience in scientifically approaching language, uncovering intricate patterns, and understanding the fundamental mechanisms by which languages operate.
