Advantage in Top University Admissions

Zonal Informatics Olympiad (ZIO) is a competition by Indian Association for Research in Computing Science (IARCS) for students in Class 1–12, open to students across India.

Mode

In-Person

Eligibility

Class 1–12

Fee

₹472

Duration

3 hours

Format

Individual

Time needed

One-time examination of 3 hours. Preparation requires consistent practice of logical and algorithmic problems, typically 2-4 hours per week for several months leading up to the exam. Dedicated practice with past papers and online resources is highly recommended.

About This Opportunity

The Zonal Informatics Olympiad (ZIO) is the foundational stage of the Indian Computing Olympiad (ICO) selection process, organized annually by the Indian Association for Research in Computing Science (IARCS) in collaboration with TCS iON. This offline, pen-and-paper examination is conducted at various centers across India, typically in December. It is meticulously designed to assess students' problem-solving abilities, logical reasoning, and algorithmic thinking without requiring prior programming knowledge.

ZIO aims to identify and nurture young talent in computer science and computational thinking, providing a significant opportunity for students to gain national and international recognition. The exam emphasizes critical thinking and logical deduction, making it accessible to students with a strong aptitude for these areas.

Successful participants in ZIO qualify for the subsequent stages of the ICO, namely the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI) and the International Olympiad in Informatics Training Camp (IOITC), ultimately leading to the selection of a team to represent India at the prestigious International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).

It serves as an excellent platform for students to explore their interest in computer science and build a strong foundation for future academic and career pursuits in the field. The ZIO is a crucial step for students aspiring to excel in competitive programming and computer science at a national and international level. Approximately 5000-8000 students participate in ZIO annually, making it a highly competitive and rewarding experience.

What's covered

The ZIO syllabus focuses on fundamental concepts that develop algorithmic thinking and problem-solving skills. Key areas include basic algorithms (sorting, searching, optimization techniques), logical reasoning (critical thinking and deduction), and an introduction to data structures (arrays, stacks, recursion). The emphasis is on conceptual understanding and problem-solving strategies rather than programming syntax. The exam tests the ability to apply logical and mathematical principles to solve computational problems. Topics often include permutations and combinations, graph theory, and various algorithmic approaches like greedy algorithms and dynamic programming.

Certificate of Qualification for INOI

Successful qualification in ZIO leads to participation in higher stages of the Indian Computing Olympiad (ICO), which offer significant recognition and certificates from the Indian Association for Research in Computing Science (IARCS).

Opens doors to

Participation and strong performance in ZIO and subsequent ICO stages can provide a significant advantage in admissions to prestigious Indian universities like Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), IIIT Delhi, IIIT Hyderabad, and IIT Gandhinagar, which offer preferential admission, bonus points, or direct admission for Olympiad qualifiers. It also adds substantial value to college applications for STEM fields, both in India and abroad, including universities like the University of Waterloo, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Nanyang Technical University (NTU) Singapore, and National University of Singapore (NUS).

Rounds & format

ZIO is a single written exam. It consists of 4 questions, each with 3 sub-parts or 'cases'. Students receive 5 marks for each correctly solved sub-part, with a bonus of 5 marks if all three parts of a question are solved correctly. The question paper carries 80 marks, broken up into four questions of 20 marks each.

How entries are judged

Based on the correctness and efficiency of solutions to algorithmic and logical reasoning problems. Students are awarded marks for each correctly solved input/case. The marking scheme awards 20 points per correctly solved question with partial credit for individual parts. The qualifying cutoff scores vary from 20-40 based on student level with a 5 point relaxation for female students.

Selection process

Top performers in ZIO qualify for the Indian National Olympiad in Informatics (INOI). Approximately 250-300 students are selected from ZIO and ZCO combined for INOI. Approximately 30 students are selected from INOI for the IOI Training Camp (IOITC).
