Kalakshetra Foundation is a cultural institution based in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, founded in 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale and George Arundale. The foundation preserves and propagates traditional Indian art forms with a focus on Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music. The institution serves students from across India and abroad through its Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, Besant Arundale Senior Secondary School, Besant Theosophical Higher Secondary School, and Craft Education and Research Centre. It offers full-time diploma and post-diploma programmes alongside part-time courses for younger learners. Kalakshetra is recognised as an Institution of National Importance under an Act of the Indian Parliament passed in 1993 and functions under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The foundation is known for the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam (Kalakshetra bani) shaped by Rukmini Devi. Its annual December festival, alumni network, and structured syllabus make it a reference point for classical Indian dance education and research worldwide.
